Retreats and Events

An experienced meditation practitioner and certified spiritual director, Thérèse has studied with Tibetan monks in Nepal and India, Carmelite contemplatives in a monastery in Arizona, and the Soto Zen community at Green Gulch Farm Zen Center in San Francisco, California. In 2004, Thérèse and her husband, Jim Jacobs, LICSW, founded Mind Roads Meditation Center, a mindfulness teaching center in the Macalester-Groveland neighborhood, where they taught introductory classes in mindfulness, loving-kindness and compassion practices for the past 11 years.

Today, Thérèse’s primary focus, in addition to her ongoing psychotherapy practice, is sharing what she’s learned about mindfulness meditation, and about the integration of spirituality with psychology, in workshops, retreats, and lectures throughout the United States.

A KINDER VOICE:  Releasing Your Inner Critics with Mindfulness Slogans

This retreat offers one of the most effective approaches to calming a self-critical mind: the ancient Buddhist practice of using “Compassion Slogans.” Simple, time-tested methods, such as thought-awareness, loving-kindness practice, and mindfulness meditation can be used to make conscious contact with the “Great Reality Within” and quiet your critical voices.

Join us for this weekend retreat at the beautiful Dan Anderson Renewal Center at Hazelden, and learn to reorient your thinking when your inner critic shows up. The use of short, pithy phrases (ancient mindfulness slogans) has been shown to have lasting effects in changing our thinking and actions. Instead of making a negative thought stronger by fighting it, you can let thoughts dissipate through mindful attention. When you remember to “begin kindness with yourself,” keeping a compassionate perspective on all that you do and say, you can transform your inner critic with a kinder voice.
